The GPB at the Social Justice Society of Stern College for Women

Monday, October 26th, 2009

On Tuesday October 20, a group of Granny Peace Brigade members gave a presentation to the Social Justice Society of Stern College for Women  organized by Tamara Freieden a board member of the Social Justice Society.

The students were a very lively group of about 14 women and one man. Many of them were from other states and we told them how to reach their Congressional Representatives and Senators; one had already visited a congressional office in person.

Carol Huston described the beginnings of the Granny Peace Brigade including the Times Square enlistment attempt, the trial and the gradual development of committees devoted to No Bases, Counter Recruitment and Legislation.

Representatives of the committees spoke:

  • Vinie Burroughs spoke about No-Bases and its origin in an Women’s International Democratic Federation meeting in Caracas, also mentioning the up-coming Teach-In on Pacific bases.

  • Barbara Harris spoke [with display and hand-outs] about Counter Recruitment and some of the students said they’d been subjected to attempts to recruit them — but obviously they took another path.

  • Eva-Lee Baird spoke about the approach of the Legislative Committee, researching legislation and holding phone-a-thons.
  • Edith Cresmer demonstrated a call to Senator Schumer, using a cell phone set on speakerphone provided by one of the students. The students listened carefully as Edith left a “stop funding the wars” message on the answering machine in Schumer’s Buffalo office.

As we were wrapping up we were asked to sing, and we sang “Voters [God] Help America.” That got a big applause.

At the end of the presentation theater lovers came over to Vinie asking what she is appearing in, and she told them she was in a play now and also in rehearsals. One student gave Vinie her email so Vinie could send her the information about her current activities. Students were interested in Counter Recruitment, and they want to follow up – helping high school students to fill out basic forms, and use the internet to find financial aid programs. They also asked about more information on the two Israeli refuseniks that recently visited NYC.

Call Your Senators to Stop Funding the Wars

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

Friday October 9th: Raindrops did not stop a small parade of us Grannies & Code-Pinkers, nor the people, from encountering one another outside City Hall Park. The message of the day, Call-Your-Senators-to Stop- Funding- the-Wars went out by cell-phone and in the hands of the people who received our flyers.

2009_10_09.jpg

The rain had some people hurrying, but promising to call from home or the office. Others stopped to talk and make their call on the spot.  It always feels right to be out there. We get thumbs up or thanks for the info (this time it’s tips on how to get through to Senators’ offices), more rarely someone lectures us on the dangers out there since 9/11.People said they’re glad President Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize; now they’d like some Peace. Many agreed that now it’s up to Congress to stop funding war in order to realize a change in policy. Katelyn was documenting us with her fine camera, creating a stir; that helps our cause.  Thanks, Katelyn.

In Praise of Charlene…

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Baby, its cold outside! Especially on the mall at Borough Hall, with the wind whipping off the river. The crowd was thin and in a hurry.  However, just when the Collective Granny Reserves were beginning to fade, a woman walks up and asks what’s happening.

Meet Charlene — a Staten Island resident and nurse who clocked in hundreds of hours in the rescue efforts at Ground Zero. Her reward? A terribly compromised respiratory system, a diseased thyroid, blood pressure issues and skin problems. Unable to work and fighting the bureaucracy for disability, she is still full of beans and smarts. She calls Shumer’s office and gives a chilling, eloquent testimony against further killing, destruction and wars — and reminds the aide at the end of the phone that she works as a nurse for the soccer league that has one of the Schumer girls on a team.

Thanks for reminding us about a lot of things, Charlene — and we are proud that you’re now wearing one of our buttons.

First Autumnal Phone-a-thon; STOP FUNDING THE WARS

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Brooklyn Borough Hall

Wow, we thought.  In honor of Green Week there is a regular village of EZ-UP tents ringing the fountain, housing gaggles of enviros out plugging energy efficiency and roof gardens.  The Green Market is laden with goodies. We’re walking into the bosom of Our People, we think.

Wrong.

There are any number of environmental types who seem to think a discussion about peace is somehow taking the luster from their mission. Trying to connect the dots between the war machine and global warming falls on deaf ears.  We move on.  Predictably, those Very Important Men In Suits give us the fish eye or wave us off.

2009_09_24two_up.jpg

Our most receptive audience is – as always – the hard working folks who make things happen in the Brooklyn Court House. They take our literature, ask for extras and give us the heart to go on.  And a very special shout out to our new buddies at the Prayer Station — they’ve promised to Pray for Peace, and we believe they will.

2009_09_24prayerstation.jpg

So next week we’ll be back at it – same time, same place – this time, it shall be known as the Very Special Joan Pleune Stop the Wars, Stop the Nonsense Phone-a-thon.  Come join us and find out why.

De-Fund JROTC Rally at City Hall

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

The rain clouds passed and the sky cleared just as the De-Fund JROTC Rally on the steps of City Hall began. NY1, FOX News and WBAI were on hand to record our message and 25 peace activists from several organizations held signs and banners. The message was as clear as the sky  No taxpayer funding for the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp (JROTC) program. JROTC is a program designed by the military, instructed by the military and serves the interest of the military. The JROTC program is where the military begins to gain the hearts and minds of our youth. The NY City Council must eliminate the $2.4 million funding for this program and re-allocate the monies to educational programs that better serve our students. Funding this program is a misuse of taxpayer money.

Elaine Brower, Military Families Speak Out, read a letter she wrote to the Mayor and Council Members describing her son’s experience with JROTC in his high school.  It was profound and moving. The letter detailed the indoctrination of a child and the general militarization of youth in the program. Cheryl Wertz, Peace Action NY State, spoke about the misuse of $2.4 million slated for JROTC programs, and the military approach to social and political change in the curriculum.

City Council Member Robert Jackson, Chair of the Education Committee, emphasized his support for the elimination of funding for JROTC and his responsibility to be heard in the education committee and budget hearing on this issue.  He energized us to move forward with our efforts to work toward the elimination of the program from NYC high schools. We were honored that he participated in the rally, added his support, and acknowledged our commitment to working for peace and justice.

Note: You can still call your City Council member and demand that allocation of funds for JROTC be eliminated from the education budget for FY2010. (more info) Keep the issue on the table and pressure from the constituents.  The budget will be returned to the Mayor’s office in two weeks.

Peace,

The GPB, The NYPD, The US Armed Forces Career Center and Beach Chairs?

Monday, June 1st, 2009

We arrived at Times Square to find the NYPD all lined up as our welcoming committee, so it appears the word was out that the Granny Peace Brigade was back at the Times Square Recruitment Center. For those of you who haven’t had the opportunity to check this out yet, there is something supremely surreal about seeing people collapsed into beach chairs in the hurly burly of Times Square, especially with those horrific images of marauding and murder beaming out from the Recruitment Center. Welcome to New York, folks!

2009_05_29fran.jpg

This is not fertile ground for a phone-a-thon, especially one that targets the JROTC program in NYC schools — too many tourists and the vibe is all wrong.  However, in spite these factors, there are extraordinary opportunities to be had in this location. And all was not lost yesterday.  While the number of phone calls were few, some people did stop to engage and one handsome young man came back to get extra literature to take back to his office. We met some stateside visitor from as far away as California and they all were disturbed about the presence of JROTC in their local schools.

As for what is next — well, dear friends, it is time to start your creative engines. Mayor Mike has reconfigured our stage,

so if we want a place on it, we gotta get cracking.

GPB AND CODE PINK “GET ROTC OUT OF HIGH SCHOOLS” PHONE-A-THONS

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

May 14 in Borough Hall Park, Brooklyn and May 21 at City Hall Park, Manhattan

It was noon and people in the street were taking our flyers and many were seeking-out their NYC City Council member’s name (if uncertain) and phone number.  Many made calls while others, requested the appropriate phone number saying they would make the call later.

2009_05_14_1.jpg
Brooklyn near Borough Hall – May 14, 2009

The messages to City Council members varied but the essence of all was, “Get JROTC out of our high schools” or “I don’t want my city tax dollars used for military training and recruiting in our city high schools.” This seemed to us Grannies and Code Pinkers a no-brainer.  People who stopped at our table were mostly supportive of our efforts. Our small crowds at the table got the attention of some people in the military.  We discussed, with them, the purpose of our action.  Our positions differed but there was discussion.  In Brooklyn a 22 year military retiree was serious in hoping to convince us that the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan were really necessary interventions.  His son was on his way to Iraq and he was a proud father.  Another 22 year veteran, at City Hall Park, assured us that high school age is much too young to be able to make the decision of going into the military.

City Hall Park – May 21, 2009

State Senator Bill Perkins stopped by and acknowledged his support of what we were doing.  In addition, he agreed with our ideas regarding the closing of the Time Square Recruiting Center and said, “It’s beating guns into plowshares” and said that he’s with us all the way.
Weather permitted, spring has sprung, and you can hear the rhythm of people fed up with a city budget that’s cutting education funds while continuing to support military service as a job option for our young people. We are keeping at phone-a-thoning.
What can you do?  Call your City Council member.  Tell them that you don’t want tax dollars going for military training in high schools.  You don’t know the name or number of your City Council member?  Find out here.  Please make the call with your message!

NY City Council – Don’t Fund the JROTC Program

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

As the NY City Council reviews the 2010 Education Budget, our counter-recruitment group is out in parks and plazas speaking to passersby about the unconscionable cost of the JROTC program to NYC taxpayers. During the Phone-A-Thon, a quick line,

‘We’re spending $2.4 million on a military based program, and the Mayor’s budget office will be cutting money for basic needs and services to public schools,” causes a person to stop.  It’s no surprise, that people want more information.

2009_01_21infoseekers.jpg

They agree that this money should be spent on public educational programs that they know may well be eliminated.  How can we cut materials, mentoring, and music and support JROTC?  Many cell phone calls to council members are made and literature taken, as people are motivated to address the issue and take action.

As taxpayers, we all contribute to this program that teaches a military biased curriculum and is often instructed by non-NYC certified teachers.  In a Department of the Army memorandum, under the subject of Army recruiting and partnership, it is noted that JROTC will facilitate recruiter access to cadets in JROTC programs and the entire student body. It advises JROTC instructors to work closely with high school guidance counselors to sell the Army story.

Our grassroots Phone-A-Thon action is presently focused on urging NY City Council members to vote against funding the JROTC program and to eliminate this line item from the FY 2010 Educational Budget.  The next step is to end the program in NYC high schools.

2009_04_21twocallers.jpg

We must work to end this program just as we work to bring truth in recruiting to students, parents and the general public.

Educate for Peace, not for War.

GRANNY PEACE BRIGADE and CODE PINK PHONE-A-THON FRIDAY APRIL 17

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

CITY HALL PARK: 8 Grannies tabling and flyering, a nice sunny day.

Our signs say,
CALL YOUR CITY COUNCILPERSON !
NO TAX LEVY $ FOR MILITARY TRAINING
NO TO $2.4 MILLION TAX DOLLARS FOR JROTC IN NYC HIGH SCHOOLS

People are into conversation! We listen and learn. Just moved to town? Register to vote..here’s a form.

A very pregnant woman who just moved to Brooklyn tells Phyllis, “I’ll make a call. I don’t want my baby getting trained for the military in high school..”

2009_04_17twowomen.jpg

Two young women with Eva-Lee: “Hey, this predatory recruitment needs to be stopped.”

Jenny recruits two other voters into making calls here and now. They want to know who represents them and she helps them look up their reps.

2009_04_17barbara_bbc.jpg

A BBC reporter down from Boston interviews Barbara H. about counter-recruitment actions.

A veteran from DeKalb Co., GA says they’re creating a U.S. Marines High School there. He’s not for it!! Hey, most U.S. voters aren’t for it. The majority are against the U.S. occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan.

2009_04_17edith_guy.jpg

Edith’s guy says reduce conflict by having the US quit going all over the world imposing our will. Another guy was in Europe at 16 in ‘44. He thought the J-ROTC is a good thing and claimed that his mother had signed to let him join. However, according to information from a reliable source, they only let kids who were 17 and 4 or 6 months go into the Army and then with their parent’s approval.

People are zooming in – conversation gets intense. Callers are getting through to City Council offices. Staffers are listening. We like to see first-time callers getting the attention voters deserve. A guy in Rosie Mendez’ office asked for info on our concerns. We should have name-dropped Betty Brassell!

Lillian P. and Australian visitors to NYC get acquainted. They’re going to read her book and she has an invitation to visit them down under! On the other side of the equator, a guy Lillian encounters smacks out with some backlash: “God Help America from people like you!”

We guess the school teacher from Sheepshead Bay summed up our position: “Hey, I’m glad to see you people on the street..since the inauguration I’ve been wondering where the peace movement went!”

Yes, we’re here. It’s about our grandchildren’s future. They need a good education, from pre-school right on up. Being taught to shoot and drive a helicopter doesn’t cut it. If we’re not manufacturing anything (except weapons) in the USA, all of our children need some super skills. Let’s put our $2 million tax levy dollars into college advisement in the high schools. That makes sense.

2009_04_17joanp.jpg

We like today’s connections and intensity. We feel most urgency from our African American and Latino brothers and sisters. One woman comments, “I see recruiter people standing outside the high school every day. It breaks my heart.” It’s a high five phone-a-thon.

GRANNY PEACE BRIGADE HONORED BY BROADWAY DEMOCRATS

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Marie Runyon, Lillian Rydell and Joan Wile were honored today, April 19, on behalf of the Granny Peace Brigade by the Broadway Democrats.

They were presented with a beautiful framed certificate with the words:

“Broadway Democrats present the Ida & Jesse Frankel Community Award to the Granny Peace Brigade in recognition of their bravery, steadfastness and patriotism as they continue the fight to bring an end to an unjust war and bring US. troops home.”

Several signatures of club officials and district leaders are imprinted on the certificate.

Many elected officials and those running to be elected officials attended the event, held at the 107 Restaurant on Broadway at 107th Street. Sen. Chuck Schumer was there, as was New York State Sen. Daniel O’Donnell (Rosie’s brother); Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer; City Councilwoman Melissa Mark Viverito and numerous others, including our own Norman Siegel. New York State Sen. Eric Schneiderman was also honored.

Joan sang a couple of songs, and Lillian gave a wonderful speech (as always) about our work to try and get the City Council to not fund the recruiters in the public schools. She also talked about the No Bases Committee. City Councilwoman Inez Dickens was among the attendees, and said she would not fund the recruiters in our educational institutions. If Barbara Harris and the counter-recruitment committee haven’t contacted her, they might want to. I told her you might.

The handsome award is currently in the possession of Joan, but she would like to turn it over to whomsoever keeps an archives of Granny Peace Brigade memorabilia.

The hors d’oeuvres were delicious!!!
