FLASH MOB SERENADES HOLIDAY SHOPPERS

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

As the winter solstice arrived, nine Grannies and one Buddy sang anti-war-toys lyrics to shoppers on Flatbush Avenue outside the Atlantic Center Mall  and gave peace cards stating “War is Not a Game.”

We then entered the mall and weaved in and out of the Target toy aisles, serenading shoppers with “Don’t buy war toys, Don’t buy war toys, Girls and Boys” (a la Frere Jacques).

Our signs proclaimed “No War – No War Toys” and we were greeted with smiles and approving nods from the shoppers.

The serenade resounded through the top floor and lasted about ten minutes until…

…store security called for help and eventually escorted us down the escalator.  The Flash Mob had had its fun and then melted away.

GRAN Central Caroling 2010!

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

GRAN Central Station once again was the scene with 15 NYC Metro Raging Grannies: Judith, Mercy, Lillian, Corinne, Rachel, Susan L., Sally, Alice, Nora, Pam, Adele, Maxine and Susan K. and Granny Peace Brigaders: Eva-Lee and Bev, caroling for peace.  We gathered at the information kiosk and sang for over an hour, thanks to Bev and Adele.

The kids loved our songs and busy commuters would stop and listen and laugh, before continuing on their way.

We were free entertainment!  We didn’t get one negative comment from the crowd, any frown turned into a smile when they heard the lyrics.  We really had a wonderful time with our great audience.

A group of four women: granny and daughters, joined us and were laughing with glee over our lyrics, it was a splendid evening.

Bud’s Photos of End-War-in-Afghanistan Demo

Sunday, December 19th, 2010

Read more and watch video in a blog post by David Wallace, “131 ARRESTED IN WHITE HOUSE PROTEST, 11 MORE ARRESTED IN NYC’S TIMES SQUARE .”

The Granny Peace Brigade gives a big thank you to Bud and Fran Korotzer for yet again being out in the streets for peace, for taking wonderful photographs and for sending them along.

Bud took the photos on Thursday, December 16 as some Grannies joined Veterans for Peace in NYC in support of the Veterans for Peace demo in Washington DC.

Bev who went to Washington to chain herself to a fence in the cause of peace had this to say about the DC demo: “It was cold out there in the snow. I moved around before finally sitting handcuffed to the White House fence with Elaine Brower and Richie Marini considering if we should have the police drag us or walk out. We chose walking, Richie was dragged….The process of getting our summons arraignment court date for January 4th was the usual pain in the butt to encourage us to “pay out” the $ 100. fine. There are  36 arrestees who opted to continue our civil resistance and go to trial. ”

Peace Toys, Not War Toys

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Why did Lillian P at the age of 94 step into a car at the Ferris Wheel in Toys R Us? And her companions Barbara W, Teddy and Carol — what could have been on their minds as they slipped in beside Lillian? On the Ferris wheel in another car was Molly (she’s 92) with Bev, Tibby and Nydia. Nearby Jenny, Ann, Edith and Barbara H rode in a completely non-nonagenarian car.

As the the wheel began to turn the twelve riders unfurled their banners and sang John Lennon’s “All we are saying is give peace a chance.”

The Raging Grannies in the lobby joined the riders in song — all of us there to encourage shoppers to choose toys that can help children become productive, compassionate adults.

The Toys R Us employees handled the folks on the Ferris wheel with courtesy and restraint. They asked the peace riders to put their banners away and allowed them complete their turn on the Ferris wheel. The riders put the banners away while their cars were down near the Ferris wheel entrance and unfurled them again when the cars were up on high.

There were a lot of thumbs up signs and two young men who were working in the store taking photographs began singing with us. But there were some negative responses. One man called out “Buy your kid a gun.” When asked to say it again for the camera he refused. A woman said “They are terrorizing the kids,” but we didn’t see any kids who looked remotely terrorized — just curious. I am heartsick that someone could attach the word terrorize to this action. Twelve people held signs saying “War is Not a Game” and No More War Toys.” Another dozen or so joined in quietly singing, “Give peace a chance.”

After a bit of amicable discussion with the security people we left the store and gathered outside to sing and distribute greeting cards asking shoppers to “Think before you buy.”

Veterans Day Parade – Thank You!

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Veterans for Peace NYC Chapter 34 wishes to extend to the Granny Peace Brigade and to all those who participated with you a sincere thank you on a job well done.  There is great need for our organizations to work together to make the case for ending the insanity of war.

Veterans For Peace has been marching as the only Peace Contingent in the NYC Veterans Day Parade for over 20 years. It was our best Veterans Day ever because of your spirited presence! Thank you so much for your participation.

We are outraged that the names of the Granny Peace Brigade and elected officials were not announced from the reviewing stand and plan to do something about it.

The spirit of Armistice Day designating Nov 11th at its founding has been lost amid displays of military might (tanks in the street!) and glorification of war (children marching in uniforms) instead of honoring veterans’ sacrifices and rededication to peaceful means.  It is time to begin to restore its purpose.

We are considering a City Council Resolution proclaiming the true meaning of Veteran’s Day as stated by President Eisenhower, a review of the terms of the contract limiting the character of participating organizations, and a discussion with the NYC office that has granted this power to the United War Veterans Council (the parade committee).  We have asked the support of the City Council members who joined us in the parade.

Long before Veterans Day 2011 VFP would like to be able to express our First Amendment right of opposition to war policies on banners and posters. We would recognize a broader range of veterans’ sacrifices (such as exposure to Agent Orange and depleted uranium, PTSD, and the risk of rape among both men and women in service).  We would highlight the true cost of war (loss of lives as well as the lack of funds for our infrastructure, education and human services). At the very least we would like our announcement read in its entirety, as others are read.

Thank you,
Bob Keilbach
Secretary -  VFP Chapter 34 NYC

Anti Nuke Trial Statement – Trial 11/18/10

Friday, November 19th, 2010

In 1945 the United States exploded an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. I was eight years old and couldn’t believe that we, Americans, the good guys killed thousands upon thousands of civilian people. We are the only country that has ever used a nuclear weapon.

Sixty five years later, relentlessly posing again as the good guys, the United States has a total inventory of 9600 nuclear weapons, perhaps a hundred times more powerful than the 1945 bombs. We continue to enrich uranium nuclear warheads to update this huge stockpile. The United States suspended underground nuclear explosion tests in 1992 but has not ratified the 1996 Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty on nuclear arms. Taking the position that the Test Ban Treaty does not prohibit experiments that don’t create nuclear explosions, this September 15th, in a Nevada underground test site, we conducted the 24th subcritical nuclear test, the first such since 2006. Two more tests are scheduled. In 2009, President Obama stated, his hope “to have a world without nuclear weapons,” but the decision to renew testing is dangerously contradictory and must be addressed.

There are currently nine countries that have developed nuclear weapons. With the exception of Russia, no country has near the number of our arsenal. The United States is concerned about several of these nations, North Korea, China and Pakistan. Others express more concern about Israel and the United States making a first strike given their fear that Iran will develop nuclear warheads.

The Obama Nuclear Posture Review of April 2010 stated that the president of the United States might need to authorize a US nuclear first strike. This maintains the policy option for the United States to preemptively start a nuclear war.

The United Nations Nuclear Non-Proliferation Conference began on May 3rd 2010. A few blocks away, at Grand Central Terminal, anti-nuclear activists were urging the abolition of nuclear weapons. The activists believe that the disarmament of world nuclear arsenals should begin with the United States.

We Americans have the right, guaranteed by the First Amendment, to peaceably assemble to express these ideas in a public place. We are called upon to do just that when our nation continues to threaten nuclear disaster. We did so in a non-violent peaceful direct action of a die-in and banner drop, neither of which “blocked the free flow of pedestrian traffic on the main concourse.”

P.S.
I was delighted to tell my National Lawyers Guild lawyer, Mark Taylor, that the MTA policeman who wrote the summons wasn’t my arresting officer. After being sworn in, this officer said he was called in from Penn Station because “there was a war protest in Grand Central.” When Judge Weinberg asked him for details, the officer stated he couldn’t identify me. The officer continued, “A lieutenant told me to write out the summons.” Judge Weinberg thanked him for his candor and dismissed the case against me.

Carol’s trial was on October 29th. Judge Weinberg wanted to review the court transcript and set her sentencing date for December 3rd . Carol’s summons states she was “supine on the floor” when, in fact, she was hanging a banner from the balcony. The “summons” officer, “identified” Carol when in fact, he too, was not the arresting officer. I am certain that her case will also be dismissed.

Thank you all for your support and encouragement, especially for those who attended the trial.

Parent Teacher Conference Night Action

Monday, November 1st, 2010

Thursday, October 28, 2010, 34 Counter-Recruitment volunteers were at 12 NYC high schools meeting with parents and students before they entered the school for teacher conferences.

Volunteers handed out flyers and the Opt –Out form.  These materials provide information about misleading military recruitment inducements, steps to ensure that the military does not get a student’s private contact information, and on-line resources for alternative non-military options for a better future.  In a time of aggressive military recruiting of youth, this action is a direct way to educate families and students about future educational and non-military options to reach their goals.

Volunteers were able to engage in brief conversations with parents about these issues.  Parents appreciated the information provided and especially wanted to know more about financial aid, scholarships, and CUNY programs available to their children.  Two men on their way to a teen leaders’ youth club program asked for flyers to bring to their meeting. “Those kids really need this info.’

To learn more about counter recruitment and this project, go to www.grannypeacebrigade.org.  Read about the issues and download our flyers.  Anyone, anywhere can participate in this educational outreach action anytime and, perhaps, make a change for a family or student through such a connection.  A teacher requested copies of the flyers to give to her colleagues at Bronx high schools. The cost of war and the cutbacks in educational programs are shortchanging our youth.

Let’s turn this picture around and bring positive peaceful solutions and educational resources to all our children. There is good news:  Many schools are now in compliance with the Department of Education Ruling to distribute, explain, and collect the Opt-Out forms from students at the beginning of the school year. Many parents shared their thoughts and were strongly against their children joining the military.  The non-military Options and Alternatives handout can help make this hope a reality.

‘Nuclear Weapons = Terrorism’ Says Carol Husten

Friday, October 29th, 2010

On May 3 2010 the War Resisters League held a protest action for nuclear abolition in Grand Central Terminal. Twenty two people were arrested in the event but only two were prosecuted – Carol Husten and Bev Rice. On Friday, October 29 Carol was tried on disorderly conduct charges for allegedly blocking pedestrian traffic in the Terminal.

Carol Husten’s Statement to the Court:

I have been charged with Disorderly Conduct by this officer. I do not see my actions as disorderly. As a matter of fact, I see them in a very small way of creating a more orderly and peaceful world. I was arrested for being part of a group that were trying to make the public aware of the dangers of nuclear weapons. My specific role was to assist two other people in hanging three signs stating NUCLEAR  WEAPONS = TERRORISM.

Let me state up front I Love My Country. It has given me an opportunity to have a great life. That doesn’t mean I agree with what my government is doing all the time. I make the comparison “I love My Children, but I don’t agree with them all the time, at what they are doing. It is my job to tell them how I feel…BUT it is also my job to tell my gov’t how I feel…. Now as for my grandchildren they are another story. They are perfect.

For their sake and future generations we must try to abolish nuclear weapons. The public has put this potential horror in the back of their minds. If we could bring it to the forefront and convince our gov’t  as Pres. Obama stated when he received the Nobel Peace Prize and I quote
“The world may no longer shudder at the prospect of war between two nuclear superpowers, but PROLIFERATION may increase the risk of catastrophes.  Terrorism has long been a tactic, but modern technology allows a few small men with outsized rage to murder innocents on a horrific scale.”

What more do I need to say except for the well known phrase:

Democracy is not a Spectator Sport.

Spend our Tax Dollars on Education, Health Care and Jobs

Friday, October 15th, 2010

On a windy Thursday, October 14 we were back in Brooklyn with Ms. Gizmo asking people to show how they would like their tax dollars spent.

Ms. Gizmo has eight categories: Arts & Culture, Education, Environment & Clean Energy, Health Care, Housing, Jobs, Military and Transportation. The voters get 20 pennies to distribute in these categories however they think is best. It isn’t easy, people have to make some hard choices.

We’ve hit the streets with Ms. Gizmo seven times now and the results vary a bit from place to place. But each and every time New Yorkers say…

Spend the most money on Education, Health Care and Jobs.
Spend the least on the Military.

After the election our senators and representatives will be hearing this message loud and clear.

Got that?
More on Education, Health Care and Jobs.
Less on the Military.

New Yorkers may be irascible, but we are peace-loving too.
