Top 5 Lies Recruiters Are Forced to Sell You to Make Their Quotas:

  1. Your chances of being sent to a combat zone are slim.
Truth: Almost everyone who signs up will end up deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan for at least one tour of duty, regardless of Military Occupation Specialty (job). The Marines have even sent band members to perform combat missions in Iraq.
  2. 2. You are guaranteed to get the job listed on your enlistment contract.
Truth: What is promised is that you will be trained in a specific job. Once training is complete, there is no guarantee that you will be assigned to do that job. Even the training is not guaranteed.
  3. 3. Once your enlistment is completed, you get out and won't be called back again.
Truth: When you enter the military for the first time, you are signing on for an eight-year service commitment. Even if your contract says you're enlisting for two, three, four or five years of active duty, you are obligated for a total of eight years.
  4. 4. You have a good chance of getting the assignment (location) you want.
Truth: Most active duty assignments are based on the "needs of the service." That means your location will be wherever your particular branch needs you most. Right now that will probably be Iraq.
  5. 5. You can get up to $70,000 “free” dollars for college.
Truth: Over half of all veterans who sign up for educational benefits end up with none of that money. First you have to pay a non-refundable $1,200 deposit to qualify for aid. But few end up with the qualifications necessary to take advantage of the program. So the military actually makes money on the recruits.

GREEN MEMORY (1951)

A wonderful time--the War:
when money rolled in
and blood rolled out.

But blood
was far away
from here--

Money was near.

Langston Hughes (1902-1967)
